With summer BBQs in full swing it can be easy to forget those New Year’s health resolutions (OK, really easy to forget now we’re nearly in March). We’ve put together these top 5 healthy hacks to help you stay on track and get the most out of BBQ season, without blowing your health goals.
- Swap those extra carbs for salad
We know, it sounds simple, but a fresh salad brimming with leafy greens and veggies is probably the most important addition to your BBQ. Not only does it help counteract some of the less healthy BBQ elements it has the potential to be the star of the show. Add salt and pepper, lemon zest, or even some smoked paprika to give it a little kick and curb those carb cravings!
- Create the most colourful kebab
Boost your vitamin and mineral intake by challenging the family to make rainbow coloured kebabs. Not only will a bit of healthy competition bring family and friends together it will encourage you all to eat as many different veggies as possible. Choose any base protein you like – chicken, beef, tofu, tempeh, and then alternate with your favourite ingredients – cherry tomatoes, onion, capsicum, eggplant, pineapple, mushrooms or broccoli to name a few options. Simply brush olive oil, or your marinade of choice over the kebab and get grilling.
- Fruity, fresh and (booze) free
Mocktails can boost immunity, improve gut health, deliver your skin the nutrients it wants for glowing summer skin and keep you hydrated. What more motivation do you need to bust out that blender! Pro tip: make a mocktail punch and keep it in an esky with plenty of ice to stay chilled throughout the day.
- Ditch the pre-made sauces and marinades. Get creative!
You don’t need pre-packaged sauces to create a BBQ fave. Blend different spices together to achieve to aroma and taste that works for you and add to any meat or vegetable based dish that is heading for the grill. A few go to flavours we love for a BBQ cook up are paprika, chilli, cayenne pepper and cumin. Go on, spice up your life!
- Ditch the heavy dips and chips
Snack smart by replacing the heavy, cream based dips with homemade salsa or guacamole mixed with herbs (trust us when we say mint and basil is the winning combination). Then just swap out the chips with chopped carrots, capsicum or celery and voila, all the flavour without the guilt!
